What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

Counselling tends to work with specific issues over a shorter period. A common approach offered is CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy). This is useful for those who want a practical approach and fast progress. It is particularly helpful in psychosexual therapy.

Psychotherapy simply means ‘mind help’. Psyche meaning ‘mind’ and therapy meaning help. There is often overlap between the two, the main difference is that psychotherapy tends to be longer term therapy and looks more deeply at the core issues, often delving into earlier life occurrences.
